Workshop Day 2

Sorry for no post yesterday.  I meant to get one up at some point, but ran out of time.  I was at a workshop all day for Common Core Standards from 8 until 3.  Then I came home, picked up the dogs, and went to my parents’ house for dinner.  After dinner we came home, I did some blog reading, and went to bed around 8:30.  Today shouldn’t be as busy.  I have the second, and last, day of the workshop.  Once I get home, I plan to read an article or two for my project due tomorrow, then make dinner, then read some more articles, and go to bed.  Hopefully I can stay awake during the reading part.

Monday is the beginning of a schedule change for Hubs.  He will be working 2-10 Monday through Friday.  I am happy that we will have weekends together now!  It is going to be hard during the week once school starts, though, as we will not get to see each other.  I will be in bed by the time he gets home, and I will be at work by the time he wakes up.  It will take some getting used to, but it’s only temporary: until December.

Well, I need to get going so I can get ready for the workshop today.  Hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday!

Monday, Monday

Well, I have gotten a few things accomplished today.  I started out by taking the dogs on a walk around 8:15 this morning.  By the time I had finished both walks it was 9:10, and the temp was already 86 F/30 C.  It was HOT already.  It is supposed to be this hot all week.  I looked at the 10 day forecast, and there are two chances of rain: Friday and Saturday.  Unfortunately the chances are only 10%.  The hot, dry summer continues.  Here are my walking companions after their walks:

Miss Rose trying to pant while lying down next to the water dish.

Mr. Bandit exhausted and lying on the cool linoleum.

It looks like they are smiling, but don’t let it fool you.  These two little ones were exhausted!  I usually walk Rose for about 40-45 minutes, and then use Bandit as my cool down walk for about 15-20 minutes.  It was tiring work today.

After the walks, we all laid down for a bit because I wasn’t feeling too well.  I think I may have gotten a little too hot.  Hubs keeps telling me to take it easy or else I am going to be grounded.  I usually do fine during the walks, I think it’s just once I stop it all catches up with me.  Anyway, we laid down for about 30 minutes before I showered and went to meet Hubs for lunch.  It is going to be our last lunch date for quite some time.  His schedule changes starting next Monday, and he will be working 2-10 Monday through Friday.  I can meet him for dinner, but not for lunch.

Once I got home, I continued with laundry.  I am sure you guys all think that I do nothing but laundry and we must be very messy people.  That’s really not the case.  I dry all my clothes on my little stand dryer on the deck, so I only get through 2 or 3 loads a day.  During the summer I also clean our sheets, mattress pad, all the dog beds, and whatnot at least once a month.  I am really bad at keeping up with it during the school year.  I also have been washing the chair pockets that I use in my classroom.  After a year of first grade germs, I figured they needed a good scrub.

My to-do list has been going pretty well.  I am still struggling with motivation to get anything done.  I will work for maybe an hour, but then I will get side tracked or bored.  Once I am done with this post, it will time to work on my final project.  I have to get this project done and one more discussion board completed, and then I will be done with this class.  I have a class in July that I need to get ready for (aka buy the book for).  It is with an instructor that I haven’t had in the past, so it will be interesting to see the work load.

I wanted to clean the master bedroom, and I did get it all picked up, but I haven’t vacuumed it.  I will still probably give Bandit a bath, but will wait until later this evening to tackle that one.  I don’t know if my vacuuming will get done, but if I get bored enough with research, I may resort to it just to get myself to do something new.

Well, wish me luck on this project!  I have been procrastinating for quite some time.

Sunday Night Chit-Chat

Baby socks! Aren’t they so cute?

The picture above is proof that I have done some laundry today.  I got about 10 pairs of socks at a garage sale this past week for about $1.50.  I also got 12 burp rags for $0.35.  The biggest buy was exactly what we set out to find:  A glider and foot stool.  We found one and got it for $50.  It is currently at my mom’s house because she is going to do some reupholstering.  Even though it really is in good shape, I am not too fond of the cushions.

And here is our newest round of Carla’s Sunday Night (Late Afternoon) Chit-Chat.  Enjoy!

What are you…

Reading? Still working on text books for my master’s class.  I need to get some research done, so I have a feeling I will be reading some scholarly articles about literacy coaching.  Sounds fun, doesn’t it?  I have also been spending way too much time at this super fun blog: ReFashionista.  I love what this girl does with goodwill clothing and a sewing machine.  It makes me more anxious to practice and learn how to use my machine!

Watching?  Nothing right now.  When I am home alone, the TV stays off.  Hubs and I watched the Olympic trials for the decathlon last night and got to see a world record broken.  It was really neat!

Cooking/Baking? I woke up early with Hubs (at 4:45) to make some cinnamon rolls.  Don’t worry, I didn’t work too hard.  Pillsbury did most of the work for me. 🙂  I have been craving them for a while, and I told Hubs that I would wake up early and make him some before he went to work.  It was fun to have a little piece of the morning with him before he left.  Tonight we are having some BBQ rubbed chicken breasts from Omaha Steak Company.  In all honesty, we haven’t been impressed with their flavored chickens.  We have tried about 5 different types (they were a gift), but we haven’t really liked any of them.  This is the last of the package, but I don’t want to just throw them away without trying them.  If they are too bad, we will just run somewhere and pick something up or make some mac and cheese.

Happy You Accomplished?  Hmmm… I feel like it has been a while since I have accomplished much.  The past couple days have been very lazy for me.  I currently have 2 more loads of laundry (one which will wait for Hubs to come home so I can wash his work clothes).  That means I did about 3 loads already.  That is an accomplishment.  I also got the kitchen counter cleaned up of all the dishes from last night.  That is an accomplishment.  I also cut back the unruly plants that were growing over our front steps.  I meant to take before and after photos, but failed… I am just lucky I didn’t melt with how hot it is outside.  (102 F, 38.8 C)

Looking Forward to Next Week? Seeing my teacher friends.  I have workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, which will be no fun (although there is a $100 stipend included, which will go to the maternity leave savings account), but I am looking forward to seeing everyone!  It will be nice to catch up and enjoy some lunch with them.

Thankful for Today? Air conditioning.  I really don’t mind hot weather, and our thermostat is usually set pretty high when I am home by myself, but there would be no possible way I would not die in this heat.  Even the dogs can only stand to be outside for about 5-10 minutes at a time. I am thankful, though, that it is hot and sunny enough that I can dry my laundry in such little amounts of time.

Listening To?  The dishwasher is running, so that is all I hear.  Both dogs are sound asleep, and it’s nice and peaceful.

*Bonus Question* What is the WORST movie you have ever seen and couldn’t be paid to watch again?  I think it would have to be The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain.  I was about 10 when we rented this movie, and it was sooooo long and boring!  I remember I had to take a phone call during the movie and found out that my family had paused it for me.  I was honestly disappointed that they paused it, but I think they needed a break from it as well.  Not good at all!

Now it’s your turn!  Answer the questions on your blog and link up to Carla’s, or answer them in the comments.  I would love to hear how your Sunday night/afternoon is going.

I Have a Tomato!

I am so excited, guys!  At the end of the school year one of the 3rd grade teachers set out a flat of tomato plants from her 3rd grade class.  (They were doing plant lessons).  I took two little tomato seedlings for free!  I got them home and planted them.  I wasn’t sure if they were going to do well, though, as I have never grown tomatoes, much less in pots.  One of the plants took off and did great!  The other plant, poor little guy, had a rough start of it.  I went outside one morning and all that was sticking out of the dirt was a stem.  I talked to my mother– queen of the garden– and she said it was probably a worm that is able to strip a tomato plant in no time.  I wasn’t sure, but each morning I would check both plants for a worm to throw out.  I ended up finding a worm, but in the other pot.  I threw it out, and ever since then, the other plant has been doing great also!

My big tomato plant has been putting out tons of flowers, but I never saw any tomatoes.  I was a little worried that it wasn’t going to, as it was practically dead after my trip to see my grandma.  Hubs said it sprinkled one of the days we were gone, but apparently our ideas of sprinkling enough to water a plant differ.  Anyways I was able to revive it with daily watering ever since then.  This morning I went out to water, checked closely, and found not just 1 but 4 little, tiny, green tomatoes!  I am so excited!  Of course I got my camera, and took a picture of the biggest one.  It is literally still smaller than my little finger tip, but I couldn’t be more proud of my little tomato plant!  Here is a picture of the tomato, and my two plants.  (The plant on the stand is the one who had a rough start.  The one sitting on the ground in the blue and white pot is the one giving me little tomatoes so far.)

It’s just a little guy. He’s closer to the left side of the picture… kind of like looking for Waldo, but he’s there!

My two tomato plants. The one in the back on the plant stand is the one who started out as just a stick. He is doing much better now! The one in front is the one giving me tomatoes.

That was a fun way to start my day!  Now it’s time to get down to business:  a weekly recap, upcoming menu plan, and upcoming weekly to-do list.

Last week I decided to make daily to-do lists to help keep things in check and make life easier.  I have to say that my week started off strong, and then kind of slowed down.  I got most things done, although they didn’t always happen on the day that I scheduled them.  I think that is ok, though.

As you can see, Friday and Saturday were pretty much a bust.  Friday I was exhausted.  I got lots of sleep and even took a 2 hour nap.  I think I was so tired from my busy Thursday (2-3 hours of walking around a store registering is tiring work).  Hubs is worried I am going to overdo it one of these days.

Today is not done, so I still have the chance to work on my final project, which I am going to have to do.  Yesterday I spent going to garage sales with my mom, which I picked up some great finds (I will blog about them later), and then I had lunch with Hubs, did the budget, and did the menu planning and grocery shopping.  Here is my upcoming week (although it is going to stop at Thursday b/c that’s when my menu stops.  I hate grocery shopping on the weekends, so I try to get there during the week sometime).

  • Go through clothes and pack away ones that do not fit

I think that is it!  Sorry for the long post.  I will try to post daily with updates so you don’t have to spend such a long time reading a catch-up post.  I will also let you know if I figure out how to keep the birds away from my tomato babies.  I need to figure something out for that.  Any suggestions?

I hope you had a productive week and are enjoying this relaxing Sunday!

19 Week Bump Report

19 Weeks, 2 Days

I really need to start doing my hair before I do these photos.  It was windy and my hair has not been behaving lately.  I am trying to decide if I want to chop it off, or keep it long so I can put it in a ponytail.  If I keep seeing photos like this, I may end up cutting it off.

We had our doctor’s appointment today!  We had the ultrasound, which I would love to share photos, but we don’t have a scanner.  Besides, baby was not cooperating.  It was lying face down most of the time.  We didn’t get a good look at the face, and the ultrasound wasn’t able to see the kidneys well.  Because of that, we have another ultrasound in a month.  Other than that, baby was super active and having a blast kicking at my bladder the whole time.

Here is the official report:

How far along? 19 weeks, 2 days (almost halfway done!)

How big is the baby?  According to our books, the baby is about the size of a large heirloom tomato or mango.  It weighed in today at 11 oz.  Heart rate was 152.

Total weight gain? I almost cried on the scale today.  I am at my heaviest: 118.  I have gained 7 lbs in the past 4 weeks, and this puts my total weight gain at 13 lbs.  The midwife didn’t mention anything about my weight gain, so I am assuming all is well.

Sleep?  Sleep hasn’t been too bad.  I am not supposed to lie on my back, but I wake up often in the middle of the night on my back.  I sleep with a large stuffed dolphin, which helps stabilize my hips and keeps me from rolling onto my tummy.  I am a stomach sleeper, so this has been quite a change for me.  I have had some crazy dreams lately, too!  I had one dream that involved the Russian Mafia.  It was quite scary!

Maternity clothes?  I think I am done shopping for clothes.  I would love to get a pair of jean capris, but I am managing without.  I haven’t needed a bathing suit yet, so I haven’t bought one.  I guess I can just be brave and wear one of my normal two-pieces… I don’t know if everyone wants to see all of this, though.

Best moments of the week?  Well, I loved seeing our little darling today on the big screen.  Even though he/she was uncooperative, it was still fun.  We also did some registering today, which was fun (and exhausting).  We spent about 2-3 hours at Babies ‘R Us, and then I did some online registering at Target.  It was fun, but hard to know how many of each thing to register for and what all we really need.

Food cravings?  No really cravings that I have had to go out and buy, but I have been loving fruit snacks lately!  They are a super easy snack and are delicious!

Food aversions?  Still Pillsbury refrigerated cookies and peanut butter stuff.

Symptoms?  My lower back has been hurting lately.  I think I am just standing and sitting differently, getting used to the large bump in the front.  I have also had a couple dizzy spells.  I have low blood pressure, so I have to watch out when I stand up quickly.  I haven’t ever passed out (talk to my sister about passing out when standing up), but my vision will go black, and I just have to stop for moment.

Exercise?  I went on walks with the dogs on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.  They will continue tomorrow, but it was raining this morning, so we didn’t get our walks in.  I usually do a serious 30 minute walk with Rose, and then Bandit is my cool down walk for about 10-15 minutes.  It works well.

Movement?  I think so.  I think I have felt a couple movements.  My midwife told me that my placenta is in front, so it acts like a pillow and will absorb some of the movements, so it may be a while before I really start feeling a lot.  During the ultrasound we could see that the baby was moving just fine.  We saw kicking (at my bladder), moving arms, opening/closing the mouth, flipping around, everything.  It is an active little one.

Next appointment? July 19th for another ultrasound.  We are still on the 4 week schedule, which seems like forever between appointments.  I am excited to see the baby again, though!

… And that is it!  I feel very much relieved now that I have seen that the baby is doing well and everything looks good.  Hopefully I can scan an ultrasound picture sometime next week, so we can share those with you!

I hope your week is going well!

Link Fest

I have never participated in a link fest!  Some of these posts may be a little old, but I am cleaning out my starred items on google reader and thought I would share some that I found interesting, intriguing, or just plain fun.  Enjoy some extra reading!

Jen at IHeart Organizing shares some of the pressures of appearing “perfect.”  She talks about creating a new definition of perfect and focusing on living the life we have in front of us.  I think this is a great concept to live by.

Vivienne at The V Spot shares some good information about choosing a sunscreen, and why it is so important to lather up this summer!

The Minimalist Mom shares with us why we don’t need to always share everything in our lives.  We crave validation, but do we really need a comment or a “like” to make something awesome?

This is an old one, but MODG shares all kinds of great information on cloth diapers.  Hubs and I are interested in using cloth diapers in the future, so this was a great place to start!

I hope you enjoy reading some other blog posts, and maybe you will even find a new blog to follow.  I will try to keep up with link fests, although I don’t think I can manage to keep up with them weekly like some of my fellow rock star bloggers.

Enjoy!

Monday Goals

Here are the dogs enjoying this warm, breezy morning as the sun comes up. We are just relaxing out on the deck.

I am up quite early this warm Monday morning.  I had to use the bathroom and was hungry… that seems to be the norm lately.  Hubs left for work about 10 minutes ago, and now the house is calm and quiet.  For a change of scenery I am on our deck typing this.  It is already in the 70s this morning, and it’s very windy.  The sun is starting to peek over the horizon.  The dogs are out here with me, and Rose is intently watching the bunnies eating their breakfast in the field below.  It’s is absolutely beautiful.

I am not one to make goals each week, but since I have not been doing that great with my summer goals, I think it may help to break them down into manageable chunks.  I will also write down my goals/to-do list so I can find it in other places besides having to get on my computer to see it.  Here are my goals for this upcoming week:

Monday

  • Go to the Post Office
  • Go to Target
  • Finish laundry
  • Read chapter and complete discussion
  • Clean kitchen/eating area
  • Read 50 pages in Book Review book (If it gets delivered)

Tuesday

  • Read 50 pages in Book Review book
  • Clean living room
  • Clean upstairs bathroom
  • Edit newborn photos

Wednesday

  • Read 50 pages in Book Review book
  • Read chapter and complete discussion
  • Clean guest room/nursery
  • Clean master bedroom and bathroom

Thursday

  • Cut back plant growing on front porch
  • Complete Book Review book and write book review
  • Laundry
  • Ultrasound
  • Register!

Friday

  • Menu plan and grocery shop
  • Go through clothes
  • Start researching for final project
  • Vacuum front stairs and landing

Saturday

  • Research for final project (Spend at least 2 hours working on this)
  • Give Bandit a bath
  • Sort through scrapbooking supplies

Sunday

  • Work on final project (At least 2 hours)

Here are some goals I have for everyday:

  • Balance checkbook/Update spreadsheet
  • Pick up around the house in the evening
  • Water plants
  • Take more pictures
  • Pray

Hopefully these small task lists will help me stay on target with everything I have to do.  I am sure there are other things I need/want to get done, and they may get added to a day that doesn’t have many things to do.  Each day’s list is manageable, so I think the success rate will be high.  And don’t worry, I have some fun things planned during this week as well.  It won’t all be hard work.

Wish me luck!

Do you have a lot to get done this week?

Sunday Night Chit-Chat

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet of the nations.”   -Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV)
I love this verse, and I love knowing that God already knows my baby even though I still have about 5 more months before I get to meet him/her.

… And on to the chit-chat.
 What are you…

Reading: Still working on my text books.  I have a chapter I need to read and complete a discussion before tomorrow night.  I also ordered another book that hopefully will be here tomorrow.  I have another book review due on Thursday and need that book in order to complete it.

Watching: Well Game 3 of the NBA finals is on right now, but I wouldn’t say I am actively watching it.

Listening to:  I was listening to the doggies play, but they are done with that, so just the commercials on the TV right now.

Cooking/Baking:  Tonight we went out to dinner to celebrate Father’s Day and our anniversary which was last week.  It was delicious!  Here is my menu for the upcoming week though:
Monday: Chicken/veggie kabobs, rice
Tuesday: Steak, corn, salad, rolls
Wednesday: Steak fajitas, rice
Thursday: Pizza
I plan to go grocery shopping on Friday, so the menu will restart then.

Happy you accomplished: Today I got our budget for the upcoming month ready to go.  We already use cash for about everything, but I am going to start using cash for groceries and eating out.  This is going to be a challenge because we usually go over budget in both of those categories.  Hopefully by using cash, it will help us stay on track.  I also started a vacation fund jar.  We get a deposit back for each glass milk jug we return to the grocery store.  I am going to start taking the money we get back from that and will put it in the vacation fund jar.  I returned 5 jugs today (since I forgot to return them last week, we had so many) and got $13.75.  It will be a slow process, but I think it will be easier since I don’t have to find more money in the budget to make a new line item.

Looking forward to next week: Our 20 week ultrasound!  Technically we will have it done while I am only 19 weeks and 3 days, but close enough!  It happens on Thursday, and we are so excited to get a little peek at this baby!  That means I will have an updated bump report and picture.

Thankful for today: My dad and my husband.  My dad was the best dad anyone could ask for.  He was strict but loving.  Serious when he needed to be, but silly at all other times.  A great teacher and mentor.
My husband is going to be a great father!  He is very excited about this baby, and I can’t wait to see him in action when our baby makes his/her appearance.

*Bonus Question*
If you could have just one thing off your *wish list* right now, what would it be?
The Canon EOS 5D Mark III.  It’s only a cool $3,500 on Amazon right now, so it will be on the wish list for quite some time.  I would definitely love to have it, though!
Feel free to play along and go check out Carla’s chit-chat!

Still Here…

I did not purposely abandon my darling readers.  I had a large assignment due for my Master’s class.  It was not due until Thursday, but I had to get it done by Wednesday night because I went out of town on Thursday.  I basically had to read a 400-something page text book, write a summary, reflection, and application.  It took forever!  I read for way too many hours; it fried my brain.  I did get the project done so I was able to relax once I went out of town.
Thursday morning my mom and I headed out to the western part of the state to visit my grandma.  It was just a short trip, but it was fantastic!  I haven’t seen my grandma in quite some time, so it was nice to catch up.  It was very relaxing.  She lives in a *very* rural town (no businesses rural), so there isn’t too much to do except catch up on your thoughts, enjoy your time together, and play Yahtzee!
We came back today, and boy were the pups excited I was home.  Hubs said they had been depressed the whole time I was gone.  They didn’t really play much or do anything fun.  Now that I am home, there has been a lot of playing going on.  I have a lot of blog reading to get caught up on.  My Google Reader says I have 124 posts to read… I will be spending my time doing that tomorrow (as well as laundry, cleaning, and grocery shopping).
I will be back tomorrow with more of a catch-up, but I wanted everyone to know that I had not fallen off the face of the earth nor forgotten about my blog.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Monday Morning Chit-Chat

I know!  Normally it’s Sunday night chit-chat, but I was exhausted yesterday and went to bed around 8:00.  I couldn’t find the strength in me to write a blog post.  Things are a big crazy around here right now, but hopefully they will calm down later this week (and hopefully I will find some time to get some more regular blogging done.)

Onto the chit-chat, hosted by the lovely Carla.

What are you…

Reading? To be specific I have been reading Issues and Trends in Literacy Education and today I will begin reading Best Practices in Literacy Instruction.  Guess whose Masters classes have started?

Watching? Nothing.  When I am home alone, the TV is rarely turned on.  I don’t even think Hubs and I turned on the TV last night either.  According to him there wasn’t anything good on, so we just ignored the big black box in the living room.

Listening to? The jingle of dog tags and lapping of water.  Rose just came in from spending some morning time on the deck and was grabbing a quick drink.  I can barely hear some traffic noise in the background because our back door is open.  I also hear some birds and bugs.  Other than that, it’s pretty quiet, but very peaceful.

Cooking/Baking? Nothing currently.  I made spaghetti for dinner last night, and I think we may do grilled pizzas tonight for dinner.

Happy You Accomplished? I got thank you notes written for the people who gave me something for my birthday last week.  I have to make a run to the post office to get some stamps though, as I ran out of them.

Looking Forward to Next Week?  My mom and I are heading out west to visit my grandma for a few days.  Unfortunately I have a lot of homework due on the day that we leave, so I am trying to get it done in the next three days so I don’t have to worry about it while I am there.  Also, my grandma lives in a VERY rural area, and I am not sure I could get internet access in order to get the homework done once I was there.  I am definitely looking forward to seeing my grandma and spending time with my mom.

Thankful for Today? The rain!  It finally rained last night and this morning.  It has been one of the hottest and driest springs on record, and we finally got some rain.  My little tomato plants are very happy about that… and I am happy I didn’t have to water them this morning.

*Bonus Question*
Best Buy Over the Last Month?  This is a hard one since I have done a lot of shopping lately.  I love all of my maternity clothes, but I think the best bargain happened this past Saturday.  Hubs and I have stopped giving our dogs rawhide because it upsets their tummies and causes them to throw up.  My brother found out that you can give dogs antlers to chew on, and they don’t break down the way rawhide does (and it will last forever).  There is only one store around here that carries antlers for dogs, and it is quite expensive.  One little stick of antler costs about $15.  Well, on Saturday my mom and I found some antlers at the farmer’s market.  For a stick that normally would cost $15-$20 it was only $4 or $5!  I ended up buying 2 sticks of antlers for less than I would normally pay for one.  I am going to have to go back again some other time and stock up on more!  And Rose couldn’t be happier with the purchase.
