A New Kind of Planning

Hello my lovely readers.  Sorry for my absence.  We are still working on figuring out a routine around here, and it’s been rough.  I am sleeping in 2.5-3 hour chunks through the night still, and Miss E doesn’t seem to like napping most days.  Luckily she is napping right now, so I am able to blog about something I am super excited about!

As a serial resolutionist, I am always looking for a perfect planner.  I like to keep track of my goals, to-do lists, and everyday life.  I had never really found planner peace, no matter what I tried.  I would end up having multiple notebooks for different reasons: gratitude journal, to-do lists, planner, meal plan calendar, etc.  But all that is changing!

Introducing: The Bullet Journal

The Bullet Journal (I will refer to it as Bujo) is not a new concept.  It was originally created by Ryder Caroll.  I don’t want to get into the nitty gritty, but you can check out his explanation video here.  Basically it is a system to keep up with everything you can imagine.  It is a running to-do list and planner with the flexibility to be anything you need it to be.  There are some basics to setting it up, and I thought I would give you a glimpse into my bujo!

One thing you will read a lot about is that any notebook and pen will do.  I found a cheap notebook at Target and thought I would give it a try.  Unfortunately cheap was the right word.  The pages started falling out in no time.  So, I went ahead and ordered a book that is recommended by many people who bullet journal: a Leuchtturm 1917.  I had an Amazon gift card from Christmas, so I went ahead and splurged on it.  This book is recommended because the pages are already numbered, it lays flat, and the paper quality is very good.  You can get a ruled one, dotted, or grid paper.  I went with grid paper, and I love it!!  For my pens, I use Staedtler fine tip pens and my Sharpie fine tip pens.

Without further ado, here is what it looks like:

wp-1457269655659.jpg

The first page is a Table of Contents.  It is referred to as an “index” by the creator, but in reality it is a contents.  You can see that I have started filling out my contents.  I don’t know how much I will actually use it, but I will stick to it.

wp-1457269650964.jpg

Next we have the legend.  This is where I have a list of my icons and what they mean.

wp-1457269645567.jpg

Here is my first spread: Our savings goals.  I haven’t filled any of them in yet, but I have them drawn out and ready to go.  I was inspired to do this page by Boho Berry, who has an amazing bujo… You should check out her site if you want to see a beautiful example of a bujo.

wp-1457269640448.jpg

My next spread is a wish list.  I have a few things floating around in my head that I want to add to this page, but I took the pictures before I filled out many of my pages.  I like this spread because I know there are things I want, but I never seem to remember them when someone asks for gift ideas.  This way I can have a quick reference.  I went ahead and kept the page next to it blank in case I ran out of space on the first page.  I plan to keep this journal until I run out of space, so I figure it will be around for a while, and I may need space.

wp-1457269635796.jpg

This next spread takes up 4 pages.  It is my future planner.  I have space for each month, and even a large square for 2017.  This is where I would write down future appointments that I would then migrate to my monthly, weekly, and daily pages as they came up.

The next spread is my monthly spread.  This is how the original creator set up his month, so I thought I would give it a try.  I know a lot of people prefer to draw out a monthly calendar and do that, but I thought I would try this out.  On the second page are my goals for the month.

wp-1457269622735.jpg

This next page is one of my favorites and one of the reasons I was so drawn to bullet journaling: the goal tracker.  I have always wanted to track my goals and habits, but never could figure out the best way to do it.  I have found this method and can’t wait to use it!  Each day that I complete a step towards my goal, I color in the corresponding day.  This makes me so excited to actually accomplish a goal because I want to color in my box.

Then I have a running log.  I like to keep track of my distance and pace.  Hopefully I can get back to it and fill this baby out.

wp-1457269618732.jpg

Next is my weekly spread.  The original creator did not have a weekly spread, but I don’t think I could manage without it.  This is where I plan out my week and also have a few other mini trackers for my week.

wp-1457269613974.jpg

My final picture is where I start my dailies.  Each evening, I plan to make out my daily spread for the next day.  I have a tracker for my water and my meds that I take in the morning and evening.  I will write down my to-do list, appointments, events, notes, etc. for the next day.  Then during that day, I can add to my list or make new notes or do whatever I want!  That’s the beauty of bullet journaling: it can be whatever you want it to be.

wp-1457269609610.jpg

The bujo can be intimidating.  I did a lot of looking on Pinterest and Instagram before I started.  There are some people out there who make their bujos works of art.  Then there are some minimalists who stick to the original creator’s plan and just make simple bulleted lists.  I like to think I am in the middle somewhere.  If I get to the end of the week or month and realize something isn’t working for me, I can simply change it for the next week or month.  If I think of another list I want to create, (which I already have… gift ideas) then I just find the next open page, start my list, and make sure to write it in my index.

I think this is going to be an amazing thing, and I can’t wait to really delve into it and use it!  Now that I have completed this blog post, I get to color in a box on my goal tracker!  Yay!

Finally Friday

ID-100252715

Guys, it’s Friday!

This week has felt like a month.  I have been grumpy (thanks Mother Nature) and naggy with my kiddos.  Miss C has been having meltdowns all week (2 days of only 1 hour naps, plus waking up at 5:30 this morning).  I have been so exhausted!

But, the best thing is that I survived.  The week is over, and now I have three glorious days off!  I have plans every day this week, but they are fun plans with fun friends.  Tomorrow Miss C and I will go have some ice cream with our lovely and awesome friend!  Then on Sunday, all of us will go have brunch with a few of Hubs co-workers.  On Monday I have a breakfast planned with more wonderful friends!  So much time with so many people we love!  I am so looking forward to it!

Don’t think that this weekend is all about putting my feet up and doing nothing but socializing… Um, did you forget who I am?

I have a to-do list ready to go:

*Balance checkbook and update finances
*Run all 3 days this weekend (the weather is supposed to be BEAUTIFUL!)
*Tape, wash, and begin painting the LAST set of cabinets in the kitchen
*Vacuum the upstairs
*Menu plan and grocery shop
*Get some reading done (possibly finish my book)
*Finish lesson planning for the upcoming week (I only have 1 subject to plan)
*Do a few other projects for school
*Possibly do some shopping (of course all with gift cards/gift certificate)
*Laundry (as always!)
*Play, play, play with the little missy

As always I have a long list and high expectations.  Who knows if I will get it done.  All I know is that I am so beyond excited about three days off with my family and friends!  It couldn’t have come at a more better time!

What is on your agenda for the weekend?

Feeling Accomplished

Here are the to-do lists I showed you yesterday:

wpid-20140604_202622.jpg

I had nothing crossed off yesterday, and today there is so much crossed off (actually I highlight the things I get done because I think it looks prettier.)

Here are also a few things that I got done that weren’t on the to-do list:

Took Miss C to story time
Met up with my parents to run errands and have lunch
Went for a walk with Miss C
Folded/put away all previous clean laundry
Took out trash (as in took trash can to curb)
Destroyed 2 ant colonies (one in our mailbox and one in between stones in our back patio)
Sprayed Round-up on numerous weeds
Remembered to put flea/tick medication on the dogs
Actually did 2 loads of laundry, not just 1
Did a little bit of training with the dogs
Showered and made myself presentable enough to leave the house
Hung curtains
Loaded, unloaded, and loaded again dishwasher

So, even though I still have a number of things on my list that did not get accomplished today, I sure do feel good about how much did get done!  Tomorrow I have no plans to go anywhere.  It will be the first day this summer that we stay at home the entire day!  I hope that the weather cooperates, as I would love to get all the bedding in the house washed.  I would also like to go on a walk in the morning if it is nice out.

I will probably try to get the fridge cleaned, junk basket organized, and bathrooms cleaned during nap time, but I may just curl up and take a nap myself.  That is really what I wanted to do today, but I am happy that I resisted and got so much done.

Did you get a lot done today?

To-Do Lists

You know what I am really good at?  Making to-do lists.

You know what I am really bad at?  Getting things done on the to-do lists.

I have been really wanting this summer to be productive.  It seems as though by the time school rolls around in August, I look back over my summer and realize that I got next to nothing accomplished.  I wanted to make this year different.  It started off well.  I had gotten quite a few things done, but I have plateaued.  My motivation is lacking, and I haven’t been able to get back with it.  I know that realistically I will not get everything done that I want, but I also know that I will be hard on myself if I don’t get much done.  (It is just how I am.  I don’t know how to let it go.)

Here are my to-do lists for today and tomorrow:

wpid-20140603_203119.jpg

As you can see nothing has been checked off.  That is partly because I haven’t taken the time to check anything off.  The only things I can check off are “Dogs to the vet: 9:00 am” and “Lunch: Out w/ladies.”  That is it.

I had the check in my wallet to pay our utility bill, but I forgot to stop by today.  It isn’t due until the 10th, so it won’t be late or anything, but I had planned to get it done today.  I also had my check to deposit and post-it note with what I needed to get out in cash.  I did not make it to the bank.

Everything else was my laziness.  I procrastinate and procrastinate, and then at the end of the day I feel super lazy.  I don’t have a lot of time to get things done during the day, usually just during nap time, and by then I am exhausted so I just want to rest.

I will probably adjust my lists so that I do in fact get things done tomorrow.  Miss C and I will head to story time at 9:30, and then hopefully actually go to the bank.  I also plan to pay our bill tomorrow as well.  And I have to make my client disc, as I plan on seeing my client tomorrow and giving it to her.  The weather is a little uncertain, so I don’t know if I will do laundry, as I hang everything out to dry.  If the forecast looks ok, then I should get at least 1 load done.  I probably need to focus on getting all the current clean clothes folded and put away before I start washing more.

Who knows when everything else will get done.  Isn’t summer supposed to be a time to relax?  I am not feeling that way at all! I suppose I do it to myself. 🙂

What do your to-do lists look like?

Busy Sunday

This weekend has already been crazy busy!  Yesterday I had breakfast with my family and a family friend who we had not seen in quite some time.  It was so much fun getting to catch-up and spend time with everyone.

I had to leave breakfast at 9:30 so I could get to a photo shoot.  I got back to my parents’ house around 11:30.  I hung around and ate lunch with them before packing up the little missy and heading home.  We got home around 2:00.  We played quite a bit, then I tried to put her down for a nap.  She did not want a second nap at all!  While she was in her room, I chatted with my sister-in-law for a bit, and I managed to get some photos edited.  Once Miss C was awake, she wanted to play, play, play.

We cheated for dinner and Hubs brought home a pizza.  Our local pizza place is having customer appreciation this weekend and all their large pizzas were half price!  We got a large pizza for about $9.  Not too bad!  It is enough to feed us all dinner and lunch the next day!

After dinner we played some more and put the little on down at 6:30.  (She usually plays in her crib for about 30 minutes and then she is asleep around 7:00.)  Hubs and I also went to bed at 7:00, as neither of us slept well the night before, and we were both exhausted!

Needless to day, yesterday was busy and fun, but that means today is a full day of getting chores done!

Here is a peek at my to-do list!

20140223_102942Lots to do and only two things have been marked off so far!  The little one is napping now, so I hope to get the kitchen cleaned, trash taken out, laundry started, and possibly another blog post ready to go!

Do you have a busy Sunday planned, or are you taking it easy today?

Sunday Night Chit-Chat… On Sunday!

20140216_181955This is my to-do list as it stands now… And yes, there is a little bit of dinner splattered on it.  Oops!  Once I hit publish here, I will get to check off one more.  (I did finish laundry, but my pen is not close by for me to mark it off yet.)  Then I will work on the very last item and be done for the night!  Woo-hoo!

It is time for our chit-chat, hosted by the ever-lovely Carla!

Here we go… What are you…

Reading? Same old, same old.  My mom has started (and passed me) reading One Thousand Gifts.  She keeps telling me I need to read more and keep reading.  My complete tiredness at the end of the day is what keeps me from reading.  It is not a book that you can read lightly… You need to really pay attention, which is why it is hard for me to pick up the book at the end of the day.

Listening To? The tv is on in the background, and the dish washer is running.  That is about all I can hear at this point.

Watching? Something about Russian nesting dolls.  The Olympics will be on soon, so we will continue watching that.

Cooking/Baking? Tonight we had chicken parmesan in the crock pot, spaghetti noodles, bread, and mixed veggies.  It was delicious (and super easy)!

Happy you accomplished this week?  I had a great photo shoot with a darling 9 month old earlier this week!  I loved it, and I love the way the photos turned out.  I need to get the editing done this week, so I can send the gallery to my client.

Looking forward to next week? I am having dinner with my dear friend on Tuesday.  Then next Saturday my parents, Miss C, and I are seeing our former youth and assistant preacher.  He is traveling through our area, so we are going to get a chance to catch up with him on Saturday morning.  I also have a photo shoot on Saturday, so that will be fun!

Thankful for today? Staying under budget on groceries today!  This is the second week in a row!  I shopped sales and used coupons and was able to stock up on items we will use in the future.  So proud of myself!

*Bonus Question* If you could have Carla make you anything, what would it be? I already have a few of her wonderful creations, including a zippy pouch I won, 5 bibs (3 infant and 2 toddler), and a camera strap cover.  If I were to be lucky enough to get another lovely creation, I would want a coffee sleeve.  I love the cute coffee sleeves she makes! (And I love coffee!)  I don’t think this would be conducive for my budget though, as if I had one, I would think I would NEED to use it all the time. 🙂

So there ya have it… Your turn!

Post answers in the comments section, on Carla’s blog, or on your blog and link up!  I love hearing from you all!

Stuck Inside Saturday

Well, the little missy and I are stuck inside all day.  We had a bit of a winter storm, and although the amount of snow is nothing to write home about, we did get sleet and freezing drizzle before the snow started.  Miss C’s car seat is still in Hubs’ car, so that keeps us from going anywhere too.  I am not a fan of being stuck inside all day, and would rather be able to get out at least once a day.

Since we are at home all day, here is my to do list:

Clean everything

That would be it!  I need to really clean everything.  Our house has been a wreck since we have had two sickies around.  I need to pick up all the stuff strewn about, as well as try to vacuum and scrub a bit.  I also want to get my February goals ready to go and post my February budget for you guys.

20140201_084453This guy’s plan is to stay warm and take as many naps as possible.  And try to eat any and all food that could possibly hit the floor.

20140201_084542This girl’s plan is to be as annoying as possible by begging to go outside eight million times today.  And then she will bring me her ball to throw, but when I throw it, she will refuse to go fetch it.  Then she will stand right in front of me and stare at me like I am supposed to know what she wants.  Not obnoxious at all.

I have already started laundry for today, but trying to pick up while the little on is awake is a complete waste of time.  Hopefully we will have two naps or one really long one, and I will be able to stay motivated enough to get everything done that I need to.

Simple Sunday

Look at this forecast today!

Screen shot 2014-01-12 at 5.59.40 AM

We haven’t seen the 50s for quite a while.  It is going to be a beautiful day!  I definitely hope to get outside and take a walk.  Today the little missy and I are going to my parents’ house for a little while to hang out.  They just bought a car seat for her and want to get it adjusted to fit her properly.  Since my mom watches her a couple days a week, it is important that they have a car seat in their vehicle to tote her around.  It was pretty easy when she was in the infant carrier.  We just got them an extra base, and then we were able to just move the carrier from car to car.  Now she is too big for that.

I think we will head over there after morning nap (hopefully around 10:30 or 11:00.)  We will hang out for lunch, and then make our way home before afternoon nap (around 1:30 or 2:00).  I also hope that by being at Meme’s house, it will wear the little missy out enough to take an afternoon nap.  She refused to take an afternoon nap yesterday, which made for a very long day.

Besides going over there, I have a couple things I need to make sure to get done.

Get lesson plans finished (I have started, but I need to get them finished)
Edit photos (I would like to get through about 20 of them tonight)
Brush the dog
Finish laundry (I only have one more load to go)
Vacuum (The shedding is making me crazy!)
Do Sunday Night Chit-Chat tonight

Well, I just heard some babbling coming from little missy’s crib, so I need to go get her!

Have a lovely Sunday!

Resolution Broken

I knew it would happen eventually.  One of my resolutions has been broken, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t get back on the horse today.  Last night I did not clean the living room or kitchen before bed.  I really have no excuse.  I sat on the couch all evening with Hubs and the pups.  I blogged and we watched our 3 Friday night shows together.  Now that I am looking around the house this morning, I am feeling pretty bad about the state of things.  Little missy is still asleep, so I am going to straighten up the living room and get the kitchen clean before she wakes up (hopefully).

Today is going to be a busy day.  I have a number of errands to run, and it is supposed to be a lovely day outside.  I hope I can get out and go on a walk with little missy.  I still need to make a menu plan this morning, and hopefully we can stay under budget for groceries.  We have a number of miscellaneous items that we need to get, which will up the grocery total.

Here is my to-do list for the day:

Laundry (in progress currently)
Run to Target
Grocery shopping
Menu plan and make grocery list
Vacuum
Edit photos
Make dinner
Clean kitchen and pick up living room
Brush Rose (who is shedding like crazy!)

I think that is it.  Hopefully I can get off the couch and get my day started.  I am nice and warm and snuggly with the dogs right now, so it will be harder than you think.

What do you have on your agenda for today?

Simple Sunday

Today we are going to take it easy.  This is what the world outside looks like right now.  There were a few flakes on the ground when we went to bed last night, then it continued to snow all night.

20140105_065130Besides just the snow, we have a wind chill warning in effect for this evening.  Right now it is 12*F but feels like -12.  Tonight’s low is supposed to be -10.  That is actual temperature, not wind chill.  I am definitely happy I got my grocery shopping done yesterday.

Hubs did have to go to work this morning.  He made it safely, but said the roads are absolutely terrible!  I hope he doesn’t have to drive around much today while at work, and hopefully the roads will be better by 5:00 this evening when he has to drive home.

I just have a few things on my to do list today, and all of them involve staying inside!

Lesson Planning (I did not get this done yesterday)
Vacuum (Did not get this done yesterday)
Mop hard floors
Edit some photos of my niece (I would like to get the disc completed and in the mail next weekend)

I did get everything else done on my list yesterday.  I have the last load of laundry in the dryer (it just needs to be folded).  I got the living room and kitchen picked up in the evening (which is one of my resolutions).  I updated our budget and got everything ready for the month.  I got groceries and dropped off a meal for my friend.  And we tried a great new recipe in the crock pot.  It was crock pot chicken parmesan.  We all loved it here, and it will be added to our menu every couple of weeks.

What does your Sunday look like?
